Like a lot of young people today, his future was just as bright; just as hopeful as any other high school student his age. But all that promise disappeared in a flash one evening when he got into the car with an underage drugged and drunk driver. That\u2019s why I am proud that as a part of our October activation of the <em>Power of You(<\/em>th<em>)<\/em> program, sponsored by State Farm, we are encouraging youth and parents to add a <a class=\"text-red\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profilepicframes\/?overlay_source_object_id=10155669803727482&amp;selected_page_id=43754732481&amp;selected_overlay_id=346292359144339\">#ProtectUrFuture frame<\/a> to their profile photos and visit <a class=\"text-red\" href=\"http:\/\/www.powerofyouth.com\"><strong>powerofyouth.com<\/strong><\/a> to read tips and real-life stories regarding underage drinking.<\/p>\n<p>The science is clear, underage drinking is dangerous and often deadly. It increases the risk of brain damage in adolescents. And students who binge drink are more likely to do poorly in school, participate in dangerous activities and even commit suicide. In one way or another, underage drinking kills about 4,300 youth every year.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that there is a solution. And it is a simple solution: More conversations with teens about the several consequences of alcohol.<\/p>\n<h3>Whoever YOU are, whether a parent or a young person, <a class=\"text-red\" href=\"http:\/\/Copy linkPower of Parents\">you have the power to make a difference.<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Every year, we promote our <em>Power of You(<\/em>th<em>)<\/em> message and encourage kids to take their future into their own hands and guard it by saying no to underage drinking. But to start a movement, we need everyone to take part.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8358\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8358\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"www.powerofyouth.com\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8358 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/madd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/POY-Fact-Bubble_purple-no-background-300x200-1.png\" alt=\"Alcohol and teens\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8358\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Power of You(th) stat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At <a class=\"text-red\" href=\"http:\/\/powerofyouth.com\">powerofyouth.com<\/a>, we have all the materials you need to start a lifesaving dialogue with the youth in your life whether they\u2019re friends or family members.<\/p>\n<p>Our <strong>#ProtectUrFuture<\/strong> hashtag is about how choices about alcohol can impact our youth\u2019s future such as being kicked off a sports team, not being able to attend the college of their choice or losing a college sponsorship and having an arrest on their records. Tragically, there are also life-altering consequences such as alcohol poisoning and teen drunk driving.<\/p>\n<h3>Promise me that you\u2019ll #ProtectUrFuture<\/h3>\n<p>Dustin never saw what his future held. I sometimes wonder what he would have become. Therefore, my heartfelt desire for the next generation of drivers to have it all. I want\u00a0YOU to make it to tomorrow. I want\u00a0YOU to achieve your dreams and pursue your goals.
