organized and coordinated screening of drivers\nas they pass through an area where traffic is diverted by law enforcement. The intention is\nto briefly engage randomly selected motorists in a conversation on the side of the road\nwhile officers closely examine the driver\u2019s behavior, language and movements. Officers\nlook for signs of impairment that indicate the driver\u2019s inability to safely travel on the road,\npresenting a danger to themselves, their passengers and other motorists. Checkpoints are\na critical component of high-visibility traffic safety enforcement, and the publicity\nsurrounding them helps serve as a deterrent to drunk and drugged driving.  <\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ad4b51 elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9ad4b51\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeInUp&quot;,&quot;_animation_delay&quot;:100}\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How are checkpoints conducted?<\/h3>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba6d1e4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ba6d1e4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Officers conducting checkpoints will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n \t<li>Engage drivers in a systematic pre-determined sequence. For example, selecting every vehicle, every third vehicle, or every fifth vehicle and so on, depending on expected traffic load at the designated time and location.<\/li>\n \t<li>Speak with drivers. If officers develop any reasonable suspicion that a motorist is exhibiting impairment, they will request the driver exit the roadway to an area\nwhere other officers will engage the motorist and make a more detailed\nassessment of the driver\u2019s condition.<\/li>\n \t<li>If the motorist is asked to exit the roadway, the officer will attempt to confirm a reasonable suspicion of impairment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"inner-law\">\n \t<li>The motorist will be asked to exit the vehicle and perform standardized field sobriety tests to determine the degree of impairment.<\/li>\n \t<li>If, in the opinion of the assessment officers, the motorist is too impaired to safely operate a motor vehicle, the motorist is arrested and further evidentiary tests are conducted to determine the substance(s) and the degree of impairment.<\/li>\n \t<li>If no impairment is present, those drivers will be allowed to proceed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-34aa6ea elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"34aa6ea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;none&quot;,&quot;_animation_delay&quot;:500}\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">All officers assigned to the checkpoint are required to wear a highly visibly reflective traffic\nsafety vest.
