{"id":7009,"date":"2017-08-03T20:29:48","date_gmt":"2017-08-03T20:29:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/madd.org\/?p=7009"},"modified":"2022-06-28T10:28:41","modified_gmt":"2022-06-28T10:28:41","slug":"hitting-the-road-to-make-them-safer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/madd.org\/hitting-the-road-to-make-them-safer\/","title":{"rendered":"Hitting the road to make them safer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">The past few weeks have been very busy and filled with variety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions invited me to join others from around the country in Washington on June 20<sup style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">th<\/sup>\u00a0and 21<sup style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">st<\/sup>\u00a0for the first-ever National Summit Crime Reduction and Public Safety Summit. \u00a0Both Sessions and Vice President Mike Pence spoke to the group. \u00a0It was encouraging that MADD was included, acknowledging that drunk driving is a violent crime that can be prevented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">A flight to Reno, Nevada brought me to the Annual Conference and Exhibition of the National Sheriffs\u2019 Association on June 23<sup style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">rd<\/sup>\u00a0though the 25<sup style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">th<\/sup>. \u00a0More than 1,000 people attended the meeting. \u00a0I had the honor of presenting to the Youth and Juvenile Justice Committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">Then, two days later, I was in Georgia giving a presentation on MADD\u2019s\u00a0<b><strong style=\"font-style: inherit\"><i><em style=\"font-weight: inherit\">Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving\u00ae<\/em><\/i><\/strong><\/b>\u00a0during a Summit for the Governor\u2019s Strategic Highway Safety Plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">The next day, I was literally all over Georgia with Harris Blackwood, Director of the Governor\u2019s Office of Highway Safety and Colonel Mark McDonough, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. By helicopter, we flew from Augusta to Savannah to Macon to Albany. \u00a0Each stop was part of the Kick-Off for Operation Zero Tolerance, a\u00a0high visibility enforcement program that targets impaired drivers through concentrated patrols and sobriety checkpoints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;font-weight: inherit\">The last month has been a whirlwind, but all worth it if we can move closer to a day when there are NO MORE VICTIMS\u00ae.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The past few weeks have been very busy and filled with variety.
